Nothing says the warm months are here quite like the smell of steaks, chops, hamburgers, or chicken cooking on the barbeque gas grill. And although we cook on our Weber gas grill year round, it’s so much more fun when the weather starts getting warmer.
Once the weather starts getting warmer is when we begin to hit the road for day trips. Problem was, we couldn’t pack our big Weber Genesis II into our car.
That is when we began to look into the benefits of one of those portable gas grills that we could just throw into the trunk so that whether we were at the beach or the state park or camping in the mountains, we could still enjoy the taste of food cooked on the grill.
In addition, we needed a small propane grill that we could take to the stadium for pre-game tailgate parties in the parking lot before baseball and football games. And oh, it needed to be the best gas grill for the money.
Although we love charcoal grilling at home, we had to rule out charcoal while away from home due to the convenience factor of gas grilling. So for our needs it had to be a portable propane grill and we decided to get Weber Q2200 liquid propane grill.
Let’s dive into the more details about this gas grill…
What is this Weber Q2200 Liquid Propane grill made of?
First of all you have to start with the Weber name. Weber does not scrimp when it comes to the materials used to build their grills. That is why these grills last a long time.
This weber Q2200 portable gas grill is built like a tank. The body and lid are made of thick, cast aluminum. The Weber portable gas grill body is not going to chip and rust like the cheaper coated steel grill will. This means that this grill’s body is going to last a long time.
The frame is made of glass-reinforced nylon which will probably outlive you. The frame does not get hot and allows you to easily pick this grill up and move it if you have to even right after use.
This grill has been dropped at tailgate parties with virtually no damage due to the solid construction of the lid, body, and frame.
The body of this portable gas grill incorporates drip ducts that channel drippings into a convenient removable drip pan for easy clean-up.
Overall Cooking Area
The Weber Q 2200 gas grill has a cooking surface measuring 280 square inches. This is large enough to barbeque a meal for a family of 4 to 6 people. And if you won’t be cooking for more than four people, why use a grill larger than this? You will only end up wasting propane.
Compact and efficient, it can fit inside both the trunk of your car and the balcony of your apartment. It weights only 42 pounds, thus, it is perfect for camping and tailgate parties.
What About the cooking grates?
Don’t all portable gas grills have cheap flimsy steel grates? Not the Weber.
The Weber Q 2200 portable gas grill incorporates a porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grate. This grate is heavy. You can tell that it is a solid piece.
The cheap wire grates that come with some other of the portable grills do not cook half as well as this cast iron grate from Weber. Food tends to stick on the cheaper thin wire cooking grates and cleanup can be a real chore.
Not so with the Weber porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate. Because it is so heavy, it holds heat much better allowing for even heating across the entire grill with no hot or cold spots. This also allows for superior searing and grilling and because food has a far lesser tendency to stick to a heavy, hot grate, your cooking results are far superior and cleanup is a snap.
Also, you will find that your fish and vegetables will not fall through this grate as there is a tendency to do so with the cheap wire grates.
And don’t forget that the Weber cast iron grate is designed with what’s called a flavorizer system that is integrated into the cooking grate. What this does is vaporizes some of the drippings that come off of the foods. The vaporized drippings then become infused back into the foods to to create a true mouth watering flavor.
Burners and ignition
This propane grill burner is an 12,000 BTU, heavy-walled stainless-steel burner which is designed to give you many years of trouble free service. The burner is lit with a convenient push-button ignition switch and the flame and heat are controlled with burner valve that with give you precise control over your cooking heat.
Fuel source
This grill operates on a standard 14 or 16-ounce propane cylinder (to be purchased separately). One or two of these canisters will give you a whole weekend of grilling and only cost a couple of bucks.
However, if you buy a Q adapter hose you can use it to connect it to a 20 pound gas tank instead. By doing that you hook your big 20 lb. propane tank to your Weber Q 2200 grill and you’ve just turned your tabletop propane grill into a dedicated, full time patio grill that will handle all of your family’s grilling needs.
In addition, if you use your Weber Q 2200 gas grill away from home as often as we do and you don’t like the idea of tossing the disposable 16.4 oz. propane canisters once they are empty, you can get yourself a propane Tank Refill Adapter.
For about $10 this little beauty is a fitting that allows you to refill your 16.4 oz. disposable propane canister using your 20 lb. propane tank. This way, the environmentalist inside of you can sleep well at night.
Is it Portable?
The Weber Q 2200 isn’t the most portable grill out there because of its 42-pound weight and the fact that you have to carry it with two hands. However, it is small enough to fit comfortably in the trunk of a car and on an apartment balcony.
Should you buy this?
Yes, Weber Q 2200 Gas Grill should be on your top-of-the list if you’re looking for a portable gas grill that is both powerful and convenient – its large cooking area, impressive power, and sturdy construction makes it a real contender.
