A CLEAR-EYED INTRODUCTION · 18+

Start with the rules and the limits

Different games use different rules, pace, and terminology. Before joining any game, make sure you understand how a round works, what each action means, and what the costs or stakes are. If something is unclear, ask before play begins. If you do not feel comfortable with the terms, it is fine not to take part.

Poker hands: a quick orientation

In many common poker formats, hands are compared using a standard ranking. A pair is a match of two cards; two pair contains two separate pairs; three of a kind is three cards of the same rank. Straights contain consecutive ranks, flushes share a suit, and full houses combine three of a kind with a pair. Higher-ranking combinations beat lower-ranking ones under the relevant rules. Specific game variants can change details, so check the house rules first.

Remember:

Knowing the rules may help you follow a game, but no system can remove chance or guarantee an outcome. Gambling is not a reliable way to make money.

Keep the setting respectful

Understand the house edge

The house edge describes a statistical advantage built into certain casino games over a large number of plays. It does not mean a venue can predict an individual result, and it does not tell you what will happen next. Short-term results vary; losses can happen quickly. Treat any gambling as paid entertainment with a cost you are prepared to lose, never as a financial plan.
